As many of you are working hard to rebuild your homes and lives following Hurricane Helene, scammers are also working hard to trick you out of your money. Scammers use times of crisis to take advantage of the vulnerable. If you’ve experienced property damage or lost your home, stay vigilant to avoid falling victim to recovery scams, including FEMA imposters.
Here’s what to watch for:
  • Unlicensed Contractors – Always verify license and insurance information, and check reviews before hiring anyone to repair your property. Also, always request a written contract with a detailed work plan.
  • FEMA Imposters – Scammers may pose as FEMA representatives, sometimes going door-to-door, asking for personal information or payment. Federal and local disaster workers do not solicit or accept money. FEMA will never charge applicants for disaster assistance, inspections, or help filling out applications. Verify FEMA workers by asking for official identification.
  • Cash Payments – Scammers often demand cash payment and usually require a large or full cash payment before any work is done.
  • Too-Good-To-Be-True Deals – Be cautious of offers that seem unusually cheap or are promised to be covered by insurance without proper assessment.
  • Urgency/High-Pressure Tactics – Scammers will try to rush you into making quick decisions. Take your time to research and verify the company’s reputation.
  • False Charities – Before donating, ensure the charity is legitimate by checking with trusted organizations like the Better Business Bureau.
